Introduction The process of cutaneous wound healing is incredibly complex, dependent on an intricate interplay between a number of highly regulated factors working in concert to restore injured skin towards repaired barrier function. Physiologic Wound Healing After a superficial wound, a myriad of systems are activated at the site in order to clear foreign material, as the primary barrier function of the skin is lost, and to eventually restore the normal structure of the skin.

Wound Infections The most common preventable challenge to wound healing is possible infection, and topical antimicrobials have long been used empirically to attempt to prevent wound infection. Wound Care and Dressings Wound care has become increasingly important given the rise of chronic wounds and the morbidity associated with them.
Skin Substitutes While skin substitutes have long been used in grafts mostly from autologous sources either for significant surgical defects or burns necessitating replacement of a large surface area of tissue, advances in this field have allowed for the development of novel bioprosthetic skin substitutes.
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Negative pressure wound therapy, or vacuum-assisted closure, has received a good deal of attention since first being used in the USA in Growth Factors Growth factors in wound healing have received significant attention in the field of wound healing in the past few decades.
